IBS [Feb. 23rd, 2010|12:40 pm]
I have struggled with a digestive disorder pretty much my entire adult life.  It has been slowly worsening, evolving over time from a nuisance to very disruptive.  Many years of trying both western and alternative medical approaches couldn't even tell me what the issue was, much less resolve it.  Recently, the combination of lab test results, an attentive (and web-savvy) acupunturist, and the evolution of the blogoshpere all combined to indicate that perhaps it is due to an intestinal parasite, B. Hominis.  This parasite is not that uncommon, and generally viewed as benign, but there is increasing anecdotal evidence that it causes problems for some people.  While I can't be certain that is the issue, it is associated with some peculiar symptoms that I indeed have.  Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to get rid of.  I've already gone through one medication protocol that is considered pretty harsh, but it was completely ineffective.  Now I'm awaiting receipt of another combination of drugs that is supposedly even more toxic.  The effectiveness of that protocol has also proven to be unpredictable, but I'm trying to stay positive.  It does help psychologically to have something to focus on.

ADHD TV [Oct. 21st, 2007|06:50 pm]
The tv was on but I was barely paying attention when I could swear I heard a commercial trying to sell an ADHD TV.  I'm not sure I want to know what that would entail.

confidence [Apr. 3rd, 2006|02:13 pm]
Taken from Motley Fool article:

* 82% of people say they are in the top 30% of safe drivers.
* 86% of my Harvard Business School classmates say they are better looking
than their classmates. (Would you expect anything less from Harvard graduates?)
* 81% of new business owners think their business has at least a 70% chance
of success, but only 39% think any business like theirs would be likely
to succeed.

Woa, this is a pretty intense story. I love the sense of forgiveness.

lent [Feb. 22nd, 2006|12:34 pm]
So I have decided to give up following sports and news for lent. Sports will be hard, but as my self-observation skills have improved, I've begun to notice a general sense of mild but unpleasant tension for quite a period after I get really excited about a game. In fact, I can get very excited about games I really have no reason to care about, because partly I think I'm addicted to the chemicals released. It's probably worse now that I don't have a TV, as I can no longer watch it as physical art but rather it's all about the results.

The news is a bit more complicated. First of all, what is and is not news? I'm certainly not going to avoid looking at the weather. I'm mainly thinking of politics-related stuff. I've thought about this before, but always got stuck on the idea that this would make me uniformed, and that was somehow bad. However, it's not going to impact my life or change my vote, so it really is just an opportunity for me to feel indignant and somehow look negatively on others, which is really missing the mark. Anyway, I'll try it on for 40 days and see how it fits.

Well that's good for the ol' self esteem. Interesting that the first 3 are so close together, yet such different people.

Since your accomplishments are seldom noticed,
and you are rarely thought of, you are expendable.
That doesn't mean your job isn't important but if you
were in Star Trek you would be killed off in the first
episode you appeared in.

I long for the good old days when the president was only an elitist asshole.
